A Diverse Composition
Equines in France are primarily divided into:
69% riding horses and ponies, excelling in sports and leisure activities,
19% draft horses and donkeys, valuable allies in agriculture, tourism, and traditions,
14% racehorses, stars of the racetracks.
A Leading National Sport
Equestrianism holds a prominent place in the hearts of the French. It is the 3rd most popular sport in terms of registered participants, with 692,399 license holders practicing in the country’s 9,669 equestrian centers.
Adding to this passion is global recognition: French equestrianism was inscribed on UNESCO’s Intangible Cultural Heritage of Humanity list in 2011.

Horse racing, more than just entertainment, is a cornerstone of the economy. In 2022, it generated €9 billion in bets, supported by:
231 active racetracks,
25,845 racehorses in training,
9,100 owners participating in this exciting journey.

The equine sector directly employs 66,000 people in primary activities and fuels a vast ecosystem. It generates financial flows estimated at €11 billion annually.
In breeding, 33,988 breeders and mare owners contribute to preserving and renewing the equine population, with 21,850 equines exported annually, enhancing France's international reputation.
